Below we\u2019ll go over the benefits of LinkedIn messaging, different messaging features, and what you need to know about sending messages on the platform.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Benefits of LinkedIn Messaging<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can\u2019t assume that just because you created a LinkedIn profile, you\u2019ll somehow land a new job or opportunity. You need to connect with other users on the platform. And one of the best ways to do that is through LinkedIn messaging. Include a professional photo of yourself, write a brief \u201cAbout\u201d section and a strong headline, and include some key skills. Give the person you\u2019re messaging a sense of who you are professionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about it if the situation was reversed. If you got a message from someone with no photo or \u201cAbout,\u201d would you feel confident that the message was from a legitimate professional connection? Or, would you be wary of a scam or bot? Fill out your profile completely to let people know there\u2019s a real person behind it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">LinkedIn InMail<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>LinkedIn InMail is a feature <strong>unique to LinkedIn Premium (paid) accounts<\/strong>. LinkedIn InMail allows you to message people you\u2019re not connected with on the platform. For example, you might <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/help\/linkedin\/answer\/a543895\/inmail-messages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">receive an InMail<\/a> from a recruiter about an open position at their company. Or, you may InMail a recruiter to follow up on a job application. A university may send you an InMail about their online MBA program.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When sending an InMail, LinkedIn recommends following a few best practices:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep your message concise.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Share any mutual experiences or connections (Did you both go to NYU? Do you love the Yankees?).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep it conversational.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">LinkedIn Direct Messaging&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Direct messaging allows you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flexjobs.com\/blog\/post\/networking-on-linkedin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">send a message<\/a> to people you\u2019re connected with on LinkedIn. You can send a direct message (or DM) to one person or multiple people. With direct messaging, <strong>be professional, keep your message concise<\/strong>, and include a call to action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that in mind, here are a few things to never do in LinkedIn direct messages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don\u2019t immediately ask for a job.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t immediately make a sales pitch.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never use LinkedIn messaging as a dating service or romantic connection!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid sending a lengthy message that spans multiple paragraphs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sending a Note With a Connection Invite<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather than simply clicking \u201cConnect,\u201d you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/help\/linkedin\/answer\/a563153\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">personalize invitations to connect<\/a>. To do this, search for the person\u2019s profile, click \u201cConnect,\u201d and then choose \u201cAdd a note.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who should you invite to connect? You might choose to connect with <strong>old classmates, former coworkers, your university professors, professionals in your industry, or recruiters<\/strong>. You can connect with up to 30,000 individuals on the platform. You can also send a note to strangers.
