{"id":4872,"date":"2021-05-11T17:14:44","date_gmt":"2021-05-11T17:14:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jobhunt.fj-dev.com\/fighting-age-discrimination\/"},"modified":"2022-04-26T19:09:07","modified_gmt":"2022-04-27T02:09:07","slug":"fighting-age-discrimination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.job-hunt.org\/fighting-age-discrimination\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Fight Age Discrimination in Job Interviews"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While questions about age rarely get asked (they\u2019re illegal, as if you didn\u2019t know), that doesn\u2019t stop the curse of age discrimination playing out at job interviews.<\/p>\n<p>Age discrimination can occur when you are in your 50&#8217;s, 60&#8217;s, and older.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; background-color: rgba(0, 197, 179, 0.4);\">But, age discrimination can also occur when you are in your late 30&#8217;s and 40&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>With age comes experience, a wider frame of reference and greater steadiness.<\/p>\n<p>But these invaluable assets can also create blind spots that trip you up \u2013 which makes dealing effectively with the whole issue challenging but achievable.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<h2>First, Look at Yourself From the Employer\u2019s Perspective<\/h2>\n<p>Walk over to the other side of the desk, in your mind, and think about interviewing a candidate ten or more years your senior who\u2019s telling you how much s\/he knows.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re on <em>that<\/em> side of the desk, you can easily feel intimidated, worrying about &#8220;old dogs and new tricks.&#8221; Warning sirens about manageability start wailing.<\/p>\n<p>This typically happens because, as job seekers, we are exposed to this discrimination. So, we try every way we know to show how good we are.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 2em; text-align: center; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; background-color: rgba(0, 197, 179, 0.4);\">Unfortunately, by trying to show that we can leap tall buildings with a single bound and stop speeding bullets in the palm of our hand, we can overcompensate and unwittingly come across as a know-it-all, a potential disruptive influence, and a threat to the manager&#8217;s job.<\/p>\n<p>The psychological insecurity that inevitably comes with facing age discrimination, leads to behavior that coupled with our typical responses can create problems rather than solve them.<\/p>\n<p>Where does this leave <em>you <\/em>after an interview? Quite possibly feeling defensive, angry and increasingly hopeless. Not a recipe for success. <em>What if there was another way?<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Then, Address Employer Concerns<\/h2>\n<p>Start by using your maturity to consciously manage your feelings and reactions, while staying alert for opportunities to counter age-based prejudice.<\/p>\n<p>This usually comes in two flavors at interviews, <em>spoken and unspoken.<\/em> Dealing with both in new ways can make a big difference.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><em style=\"background-color: rgba(0, 197, 179, 0.4);\">\u00a0 IF They Ask You Your Age&#8230;\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Let\u2019s get the spoken discrimination out of the way first.<\/p>\n<p>The blatantly illegal, <em>&#8220;How old are you?&#8221;<\/em> doesn\u2019t happen very often, but &#8212; if it does &#8212; you could say, <em>&#8220;That\u2019s an illegal question, and I\u2019m not going to answer it.&#8221; <\/em><\/p>\n<p>However, this response rarely results in a job offer. Remember that whatever happens at an interview, you are there to get a job offer and in the process help transform one of your weaker skills into a strength.<\/p>\n<p>A different response might be, <em>&#8220;I\u2019m forty-nine.&#8221;<\/em> Okay, but this doesn\u2019t do anything to advance your candidacy.<\/p>\n<p>How about,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 2em; text-align: center; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; background-color: rgba(0, 197, 179, 0.4);\"><em>&#8220;It\u2019s interesting you should ask. I just turned forty-nine. That gives me X years in the profession, and Y years doing exactly the job you\u2019re trying to fill. In those years I\u2019ve gained experience dealing with all the problems we face in this department <\/em>(illustrate with an example)<em>. I\u2019ve made my share of mistakes and learned from them <\/em>(pause)<em>, and all on someone else\u2019s payroll <\/em>(smile)<em>. I guess the real benefit of my experience and energy level is my ability to\u2026&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Then, finish with a <strong>benefit statement<\/strong>(s) about the <a title=\"problem solving skills in a job interview\" href=\"https:\/\/www.job-hunt.org\/what-are-problem-solving-skills-how-to-use-them-at-work\/\">problem solving skills<\/a> your experience brings to the job.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><em style=\"background-color: rgba(0, 197, 179, 0.4);\">\u00a0 Addressing Unspoken Age Discrimination\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Even when age related questions remain unspoken, they are invariably still in mind. So, you have two options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Say nothing, and hope age isn\u2019t an issue\u2026 yeah.<\/li>\n<li>Face the reality, and translate the benefits of your experience into unique selling points.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can weave in the following ideas at appropriate times during the interview, but if not before, then when the interviewer asks towards the end, &#8220;Do you have any questions?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You can personalize your answer along the lines of:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 2em; text-align: center; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; background-color: rgba(0, 197, 179, 0.4);\"><em>&#8220;Jack, if I sat in your chair looking at me, a seasoned professional, I\u2019d have a bunch of age-related questions that I couldn\u2019t ask. I\u2019d be considering issues like drive, manageability, and how well I\u2019d get on with a team where everyone looks to be X-Y years younger, and I\u2019d be thinking about my ability to keep up, skill and energy wise.&#8221; <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Then proceed, as in the previous example, with the benefits that your experience and maturity allow you to bring to the job. You can add any of the following as they relate to the job:<\/p>\n<h4>\u23e9 Experience Handling Emergencies<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 2em;\"><em>&#8220;My experience means that I have already lived through countless crises <\/em>(be ready with an example that shows you in a good light)<em>. They happen in even the best-run departments, but with me you\u2019ll know I\u2019ve already lived through them and know how to handle them calmly, and perhaps my steadying influence can help bring the team together in trying times.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>\u23e9 Loyal &amp; Reliable<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 2em;\"><em>&#8220;The average professional stays in a job four years, and the younger your workforce, the faster the turnover. Employee churn is disruptive to meeting the department\u2019s deliverables and that effects your reputation as a manager. Hire another Young Turk and you know that s\/he will likely be gone in four years &#8211; after constantly haggling for raises and promotions.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>\u23e9 Not a Threat<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 2em;\"><em>&#8220;I don\u2019t want your job. I want this job, and I\u2019m not looking to change again in four years.
