It can be easy to get timid and sheepishly ask for less for fear of rejection. But if you have accurate salary information and data for your job, you can <strong>become confident and sure, and present your case more effectively<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reference the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and use&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flexjobs.com\/blog\/post\/negotiate-salary-and-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">online resources to research salary and benefit information<\/a> in your industry. Sites such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.glassdoor.com\/Salaries\/know-your-worth.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Glassdoor,<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salary.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Salary.com<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.payscale.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PayScale<\/a>&nbsp;can help you find the going rate for your position in your region. Likewise, contacts from LinkedIn, professional groups, and&nbsp;your network may be able to assist in evaluating your potential worth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Evaluate Your Wins and Practice<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What story are you telling management when asking for a raise? Professionals should<strong> track completed projects and their financial impact<\/strong>. And using that information, they should be able to show decision-makers how the work completed has helped the company, says&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/carlotaworldwide.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Carlota Zimmerman<\/a>, a career development coach and success strategist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you take initiative on some important projects? Did you save the day? Did you personally, for example, bring in some big clients? \u201cYou\u2019re asking for money,\u201d says Zimmerman. \u201cTake the time and write out some talking points explaining what it is you\u2019ve done that you believe qualifies you for a raise. <strong>Make it easy for your boss to understand what you want, and why you deserve it<\/strong>. Rehearse these talking points until you can enunciate with confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Best Times to Ask For a Raise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Annual Review<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Potentially, the ideal time to ask for a raise is during an annual review. Your performance is already a subject of conversation, and that <strong>can<\/strong> <strong>provide a natural lead<\/strong>&#8211;<strong>in<\/strong> to talking about a raise. Managers may even expect to discuss promotions and raises at this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When Your Duties Increase<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If <strong>you&#8217;ve taken on new tasks and your job scope has grown beyond what you were originally hired for<\/strong>, ask for a raise. Maybe you&#8217;re now managing someone or a new project. Perhaps you&#8217;ve taken a professional development course that&#8217;s increased your knowledge. Whatever it is, you&#8217;ll have concrete examples of how you&#8217;ve grown your job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Before the End of the Quarter or Fiscal Year<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Many companies set budgets by the quarter and at the end of the fiscal year<\/strong>. If your company&#8217;s fiscal year starts in January, budgeting may be happening in November. If you ask for a raise late December, you may be told the budget is already set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re not privy to this information, you can let your manager know that you&#8217;d like to discuss compensation and ask when the next best time is to discuss it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">On a Friday Morning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The best time to ask for something big may be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/alicegwalton\/2015\/07\/18\/when-is-the-best-time-of-day-to-ask-for-a-raise-psychologists-weigh-in\/#2eefb188b36b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Friday morning<\/a>. According to <em>Forbes<\/em> magazine, \u201cOne\u00a0study\u00a0showed what is called the\u00a0morning morality effect; <strong>people tend to have higher levels of moral awareness in the morning<\/strong> and make less ethical decisions as the day wears on. In order to get a well-deserved raise, it may make sense to take advantage of your boss&#8217;s morning morality (after the coffee, of course).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>More:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.job-hunt.org\/when-to-ask-for-a-raise\/\">When to Ask for a Raise<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Are You Asking for a Raise?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The most important thing about asking for a raise isn\u2019t how or when to ask, but rather to make sure you are actually deserving of one, says&nbsp;Ben Brooks, CEO of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pilot.coach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PILOT<\/a>, a tech startup helping managers retain their best talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask yourself <strong>on what basis do you deserve a raise, and can your manager justify it when they have to defend it<\/strong> <strong>to their boss, HR, or finance<\/strong>. Things like \u201cI\u2019ve been working hard,\u201d \u201ccosts of living are going up,\u201d or \u201cI\u2019ve been here for two years now\u201d are not legitimate reasons to ask for a raise, says Brooks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Providing clear, results-focused justification for a raise is key<\/strong>. \u201cIf you\u2019re managing twice the number of projects as your colleagues, for instance, and doing so with high-quality results, that\u2019s a great justification,\u201d says Brooks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you present several concrete points as to why you have both earned a raise, and ultimately, how it will either earn the company more money and\/or continue to save the company money, you are much more likely to get the raise. Use data, and be sure to quantify your efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to Expect When Asking for a Raise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Asking for and receiving a raise will likely be a multipart conversation. You won&#8217;t likely get a &#8220;yes&#8221; or &#8220;no&#8221; on the spot, but you have a higher chance of being turned down during the initial conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure to set an expectation for when you&#8217;ll hear back from your manager. And don&#8217;t forget that this is a negotiation, so <strong>your boss may counter with a lower amount<\/strong> or give you the full increase on the condition that you take on additional responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you accept this is up to you, but consider the offer and respond with respect. Be sure to find out the details, such as when you&#8217;ll see the increase (your next paycheck?), if there will be any change in role expectations, or if there&#8217;s any paperwork you&#8217;ll have to address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Have a Backup Plan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If money isn\u2019t an option,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flexjobs.com\/blog\/post\/negotiate-a-work-from-home-arrangement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">what else can you negotiate<\/a>? After you ask for a raise, your manger may still say, \u201cWe don\u2019t have the money right now.\u201d Don\u2019t be disheartened if this happens\u2014the conversation doesn\u2019t need to end if you have a backup plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Consider asking for additional benefits<\/strong> that don\u2019t require as much from the budget, such as a flexible working arrangement, additional vacation days, or professional development opportunities. You might consider at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flexjobs.com\/blog\/post\/how-to-ask-for-a-promotion-at-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">asking for a promotion<\/a>. It could, in the meantime, increase your job satisfaction and tide you over until you do get the raise you deserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Next Steps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you didn&#8217;t get the raise you were hoping for, consider your options.
